Konosuba (10 episodes Single season Ongoing) 8.4 out of ten stars
Perhaps it's too early to review anime that will get another expected season, but what I plan to
to do is I plan to do an update instead and keep the old commentary and review and simply post another commentary upon what was added and developments made etc.. etc... After doing some long form commentary these past few days I'm a little tired, So I felt I would do a commentary on a short but ultra sweet series called Konosuba. A very new series that aired this spring I believe.
Along with that the characters are rather young, so I don't mind going more into character analysis as their relationships with each other are very simple and straight forward, as this is a comedy/fantasy/adventure series with a dash of some splice of life moments. The animation is just great, Just the right, potent amount of saturation and wonderfully colourful environments, this anime just has such a vibrant place in my heart. Movement and action scenes are fluid as well...
Currently there's only a Japanese dub.. And it's great, like really great, just incredibly dynamic and transient voice actors, that have such a expressive and natural flow to them, mind you I don't speak Japanese so I'm just going of tone and pacing and of course a sub. Again this anime just does a lot right with the meek 10 episodes they were given, (although I believe there's an Ova that goes along with it)
I'll tell you right off the bat, this anime was very charming to me, great soundtrack, one that I'd actually listen to every time before I watched each episode, refreshingly great & vibrantly colourful animation, funny, eccentric and exciting characters, and mini stories and plots.. whatnots.. Although this does have some fan service some may roll their eyes about, particularly the feminist crowd, no insult intended, meh, I've seen worse (Cough Elfen Lied). It wasn't too distracting like say Motoko Kusagnagi's get up was in the first SAC debut season (And not in a good way) in fact this comedy sort of loaned itself to those kind of kooky moments as well as our series Asshole Kazuma (yes.. indeed..doing it right)
by getting hit by a tractor moving 5 miles per hour (no faster than walking speed) He gets ridiculed
and laughed about his pathetic death from our beautiful and charming, yet brain-dead goddess Aqua. He exacts his revenge upon her by taking the wish she grants Kazuma to forcibly relinquish her title as the god of this realm and accompany him on his MMORPG like journey to defeat the mysterious big badasstitude bad guy.. The devil king.
Anyway she looses all of her remaining screws and goes bat shit crazy. Later on they sort of fail at this mmo, go around getting wasted and not accomplishing anything. Though when they meet Megumin and Darkness things start to change. Though it's not like there any better than the first two, no there just as hopeless. Though together, they later on prove to be an effective team, and that becomes one of this series highlights and magical/fantastical moments. It's great seeing relatively ridiculously incompetent and unfocused characters pull of amazing feats when the time comes. Mind you..10 episodes.. yes 10.. so there's not a whole lot of characters though surprisingly there's quite a good amount and with great variety within the cast, so long winded stand alone episodes are a no no till season 2 drops.
but yeah essentially just likes and fantasizes all the time of having a sexually sadistic relationship with every man she comes across, and there's not much to her other than that..not very memorable.
Along with that you have a very decent cast of characters, though you can tell our creator was a pervert since there's pretty much no other males other than Kazuma that gets the spot light, the opposite problem from Ghost in the shell SAC (this series no question is going to get one of those creepy hentai spoofs). Moving along I do like Kazuma and Megumin's relationship they develop after she practices her magic everyday, Kazuma carries back the stubborn mage who won't violate her arsenal with anything other than explosion magic. Aqua and Kazuma always have confrontational moments, and other moments where Kazuma's just an Asshole (doing it right) or Aqua's a bitchy baby crying all the time, all genuinely funny moments. Kazuma's deviant nature also plays hand in hand with some of the new talents he abuses.
Despite the less than complicated premise, light over arching story line, and the simply innocent and sweet characters, like sushi, small things an elements executed well can absolutely achieve greatness. I think the future for this small franchise is bright. I didn't find anything particularly wrong at all, when thinking about it's intended audience and message. Some will complain it's dumb and wack, yes it's dumb.. & funny/charming. when you have a more cerebral approach to anime, a more serious premise say such as Bokurano, it's much more difficult to pull off, due to the emotionally dense baggage, and as of yet, Konosuba is simply not designed and made to be that way. So like the anime Space Dandy, I really don't expect a ultra serious plot, and I don't expect dense rosy rom com moments, and why would you? right..
This is an extremely light series, clocking in at 10 episodes, almost like a long movie
at around 3-4 hours, it's easy to digest, motivating to watch, and it's production was executed well.
No I absolutely did not have to slug this anime around like a corpse while dreading watching it, (DBZ Cell Fight Cough) it simply has all the motivation you need and intrigue right from episode one right all the way to episode 10. Though I'll have to wait till season two comes and goes and possibly a third to consider it WoF potential/material, but I have no problem recommending this series in a heartbeat, due to it's light, sparkly and fun nature.
Highly Appreciated & Recommended (Will Be Placed On The Stuff We Like Page)
