Addendum
After a long review process and critical scrutiny, while Kara No Kyoukai will have it's overall score debunked from the initial review, the franchise will still just qualify to be on Q's WoF in spite of that. Despite the issues found with the story, characters and production aspects, Kara No Kyoukai has so far withstood the test of time, and still has retained it's magic from a decade ago, as it's too much of a modern classic and staple of the modern era to not retain it's status as a WoF inductee and after a staggering 3 month review process in putting together this anthology review, I certainly believe I had a sufficient amount of time to think over it. It's a little rough around the edges and has it's discernible flaws, however Kara No Kyoukai also has it's distinctly daring and magical moments as well, in that the stars are still able to align between the story, characters, sound and visuals more than often enough to retain it's status as a story and animation marvel.
It's a beautifully compelling and nihilistically dark story about navigating morality and finding happiness within the ordinary, and that's what makes it so special in setting it apart from other fantastical anime productions. If you're a fan of more psychedelic works such as Ghost in the Shell & Texhnolyze wanting a similar amount of action and complexity within it's characters, plot & emotional context, alongside a touching but peculiar romance, I strongly recommend this to viewers who like a dryer take on story telling and with the patience to bare with it, as you'll be handily rewarded if you do so. In that there's true genius in how some of the films are told though their corresponding visuals and music for those patient enough to watch the film series and other corresponding films, beginning middle to end.
- As a side note, I also highly recommend reading the original source materials as well. However despite the original plan being for Del Ray to print and release english versions of the novel, the company Del Ray became defunct before it could happen. So I've had to read a fan translation of the light novel series and while the first chapter was an utter disaster, the next novel over until I finished reading all of the novels we're such a wholesome and warming experience to read, as I find some parts within the novels to be quite a bit more plush and intimate, giving me a new take on what the story had to offer. So until official releases are put out into the wild, for now I do recommend going online and fetching a translation where you can.
